Song of the Week: Troye Sivan Knows Love Can Be a Drag on “One of Your Girls”

Song of the Week delves into our favorite tracks . Find these tracks and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist, and for our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Troye Sivan shows the power in vulnerability with “One of Your Girls.”

With “One of Your Girls,” Troye Sivan gets vulnerable — and he does so without sacrificing the supercharged pop sound woven through his new album,  Something to Give Each Other. “Give me a call if you ever get lonely/ I’ll be like one of your girls, or your homies,” he sings on the chorus over delicate guitar and heavy synths. “Give me a call if you ever get desperate,” he adds, a clarification that feels important. It’s what ensures that this is not a love song — he later asks for a moment to “plead his case,” resigned and seeming to accept his fate to never be the first choice.

The music video adds an artful layer that has propelled “One of Your Girls” to the forefront of the musical conversation. Featuring actor and singer Ross Lynch, the video shows Sivan slipping into a truly incredible drag set, and it’s the performance of femininity itself that underscores the level of desire he’s trying to communicate to the subject of the song. The object of his affection doesn’t care about him, yet he’ll do anything to get him to look his way, proven by his commitment to the blonde, contoured, and perfectly dressed persona.

In a statement, Something to Give Each Other was described as “a celebration of sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship.” Drag, and its place within the queer community, have been particularly under fire in the US in recent years, and “One of Your Girls” explores the nuance and range unlocked by the time-honored practice.

With Something to Give Each Other, stacked with some of the catchiest melodies he’s offered to date, Sivan is confidently stepping into the next stage of his career. He just happened to do so in some cozy leg warmers and killer heels.
