Screaming Females Announce Breakup

Screaming Females are calling it quits after 18 years as a band. The New Jersey punk trio announced their breakup through a social media statement posted on Tuesday, December 5th.

“After 18 years we have decided that Screaming Females is coming to an end,” they wrote. “A lot changed around us over those 18 years but at our core we operated pretty much the same throughout. We funded and made the records we wanted to make.”

The group continued, “We did our own art. We printed a lot of our own merch. We managed ourselves. Probably most importantly we loaded up our van with our gear and traveled around the world to play shows wherever you would have us.”

After acknowledging that “there are too many people to thank and too many things that should be said,” Screaming Females encouraged fans to order leftover merch at their website.

Comprised of Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and Mike Abbate on bass, Screaming Females got their start in the basement scene of New Brunswick, New Jersey. After self-releasing their first two albums, Baby Teeth and What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, the band signed to Don Giovanni Records in 2009.

The indie label would serve as Screaming Females’ home for the remainder of their career, including highlights like 2012’s Ugly and their most recent album, Desire Pathway, released this past February.
