Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy Cover R.E.M.’s “Radio Free Europe” on Seth Meyers: Watch
Actor Michael Shannon and guitarist Jason Narducy are about to embark on a tour during which they’ll be performing songs from R.E.M.‘s 1983 debut album Murmur. They got a good rehearsal in Monday night (December 4th) performing “Radio Free Europe” on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Shannon and Narducy have performed a handful of tribute shows in the past — notably The Smith’s The Queen Is Dead — but the timing was just right for them to take R.E.M. for a spin. Chatting with Meyers in the interview segment of the episode, Shannon reminisced on performing Murmur at Chicago’s Metro this summer, marking the 40th anniversary of both the album and the venue.
Shannon and Narducy were in for a surprise that night when, just moments before they were supposed to go on stage, they got a green room visit none other than R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, who ended up joining them onstage a few songs into the set: “The crowd started cheering, and I’m like, ‘man, I’m really killing it,’” Shannon said. “Then I turn to my right and Mike Mills is standing there singing, and I thought, ‘oh, this has nothing to do with me.’”
Sadly, no members of R.E.M. made a surprise appearance for Shannon and Narducy’s rendition of “Radio Free Europe,” but we like to think Mills would’ve been proud. Watch it below.
