Toro y Moi Surprise Drops New EP Sandhills: Stream

Surprise — Toro y Moi is back with a brand new EP called Sandhills, which arrives with an accompanying short film.

While the musical alias of Chaz Bear has often been more closely associated with genres like alt-pop, disco, psych, and yacht rock, Sandhills — named after a sleepy shopping mall in Bear’s hometown of Columbia, South Carolina — sees the musician explore a more folksy, Americana side of his art, fleshing out his songwriting with banjo, lap steel, and a lot of nostalgia. Sandhills is an ode to Bear’s Southern upbringing, but also acts as a benchmark of how far he’s come since passing out his first batch of self-recorded CDs.

Sandhills, the film, takes a pretty literal approach to this homecoming. It was produced by Bear’s high school photography teacher Katherine Perry, and directed by Steve Daniels, who once assisted Bear for a video with his high school band. The football team featured in the clip is also Bear’s actual high school football team.
