Today’s mortgage and refinance rates: August 21, 2022 | Rates fluctuate again thanks to uncertain economic climate

Mortgage rates have generally been trending down from their June peak, when the average 30-year fixed rate hit 5.81%. But uncertain economic conditions have led to some volatility, which has caused rates to increase over the past few days.

Each Thursday, Freddie Mac releases weekly averages for 30-year and 15-year fixed mortgage rates, and 5/1 adjustable mortgage rates. Last week, the average 30-year fixed rate dropped to 5.13%, down from the previous week’s 5.22%. But by the time Freddie Mac had released its data for the week, rates had already started to tick back up. They remain elevated today.
