Snail Mail Announces Valentine Demos EP, Shares Previously Unreleased Song “Easy Thing”: Stream

Snail Mail is marking the second anniversary of her sophomore LP, Valentine, with the appropriately titled Valentine Demos EP, due out November 3rd. Ahead of the project’s release, she’s shared the previously unreleased song “Easy Thing,” which you can listen to below.

Lindsey Jordan looked back at the making of Valentine — released during the pandemic — in a statement. “Without further ado, here are the demo versions of some of the songs that would become integral to the making of Valentine,” she said.

“A little over three years ago, holed up at my parents’ house in Maryland, with just a minilogue synth, an interface, a mic, and a guitar, I started working on writing my second full length record. I prefer some of the demos to what actually came out on the record because of how intimate and solitary the process was. You can kind of hear me crying in one of them. Maybe two actually haha.” Pre-orders for the project are ongoing.

Snail Mail’s second album saw Jordan incorporate synths into her Matador Records-fitting indie rock sound, but it also gave her the space to get more vulnerable than ever on acoustic ballads like “Light Blue” and “c. et al.” The newly released “Easy Thing” veers toward the latter side of Jordan’s sound, as the singer-songwriter picks a delicate guitar lullaby while questioning a relationship with fresh eyes.

“Autumn was a blur to me too/ Was I just a concept and clothing to you?” she ponders, before asking herself, “Falling in love with such losers for what?” It’s a brutally honest song, but delivered with the beauty we’ve come to expect from Snail Mail. Check it out below.

Last year, Snail Mail helped Consequence ring in our 15th anniversary by taking the Consequestionnaire. This weekend, the artist will perform at the The National Homecoming Festival in Cincinnati before heading to Japan for a run of tour dates.
