Ridley Scott’s Four-Hour-Long Napoleon Director’s Cut to Premiere on Apple TV+
Ridley Scott is sitting on a whopping four-hour-long director’s cut of his new historical drama Napoleon that will receive a release through Apple TV+.
“I’m working on it,” Scott said of the edit in a new interview with Total Film (via IndieWire). “It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning. And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony, and then it has its run, and then the perfect thing is that [the director’s cut] goes to streaming, and we have four hours 10 minutes.”
The theatrical cut of Napoleon already takes over two and a half hours to summarize the life of its titular French leader, played by Joaquin Phoenix. But a lengthy film doesn’t necessarily constitute an extended schedule for its actors, at least if Scott has any say in it; he added that he was able to shoot all of Napoleon in just two months, an especially speedy turnaround for such an elaborate, big-budget project.
“Every scene is geometry,” Scott said. “By having 11 to 14 cameras, we shot Napoleon in 62 days. I’m doing Gladiator 2 now in 54 days, because I’m not doing 50 takes with one camera, on one shot, and then turning around.”
Of course, if you’re trying to be an efficient filmmaker, it helps to have just the right cast. Scott went on to say how seeing Phoenix in Joker helped him decide who’d be his leading man for Napoleon.
“I’m staring at Joaquin [in Joker] and saying, ‘This little demon is Napoleon Bonaparte,’” Scott said. “With Napoleon, I think we dug in and found the character, or as close to what he may have been. Joaquin is probably the most special, thoughtful actor I’ve ever worked with.”
The four-hour cut of Napoleon will stream on AppleTV+ following the film’s theatrical premiere on November 22nd. Afterwards, we’ll see Phoenix as the Joker again in Joker: Folie à Deux, due out next year.
