From the moment her older sister introduced her to Edward Scissorhands, singer-songwriter Oh Land felt a kinship with the lead character (Johnny Depp) and his love interest, Kim (Winona Ryder). As a pre-adolescent trying to make sense of the world, she felt connected both to the isolation and awkwardness oozing out of Edward and the romance and whimsy that shone out of Kim.

On this episode of The Spark ParadeOh Land gushes about why the movie connected with her so much at a young age, and why it continues to resonate with her to this day. As the Danish musician sees it, this lasting impression is in large part thanks to Danny Elfman’s wonderful score.

“I’ve been so into finding these partnerships with film and music, where it really just elevates to another level,” she explains. “Particularly, ‘Ice Dance,’ where he is sculpting this ice figure and the flakes from him cutting the ice becomes this snow that Winona Ryder is dancing in. For me, I don’t know who I was in love with, Winona Ryder or Edward Scissorhands. It was this perfect, [beautiful] moment.”
